“We’re going to get the workplace investigation right the first time. That’s our goal,” said Kristina Vaquera, a Norfolk-based attorney with Jackson Lewis P.C. Jackson Lewis attorney Milena Radovic and SHRM Senior Certified Professional Stacy Hawks of the City of Virginia Beach joined Vaquera at the Hampton Roads Chamber and Hampton Roads Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) event titled Investigations in the Workplace:  The HR Sleuth. The speakers laid out the implications of and how to navigate workplace grievances and investigations. The event is part of the Hampton Roads Chamber Human Resources for Business Leaders: A Four Part Professional Series Teaching New Practices in the Field of HR.

When a grievance or accusation is made within the workplace that violates company policy or federal/state law, the gears of business can come to a grinding halt. Therefore, Vaquera, Hawks, and Radovic stress the importance of getting the investigation into the grievance or accusation right—and getting it right quickly. This is the primary service of the Human Resources department. Hawks notes, “In terms of providing service to our business, we need to act quickly.”

About 80 regional HR managers and specialists attended the Hampton Roads Chamber/SHRM event, enjoying lunch provided by Chef’s Choice Catering by Kroger. Kroger’s Catering Events Specialist Madeline Gilmore made a brief statement at the event.

Vaquera, Hawks, and Radovic went through the employee complaint response process step by step—six of them. This included what and how to document the process, what questions to ask, how to prepare findings, how to close the investigation, and, finally, what workplace healing requires following this process.

This event was lively, with a large portion of the presentation dedicated to answering attendees’ follow-up questions.

The Hampton Roads Chamber Means Business. We are a forceful economic partner, inspiring ignitor, impactful advocate and regional collaborator. The goal of 2019 Human Resources for Business Leaders four-part series is to help local small businesses and human resource professionals learn about new strategies and practices in human resource management.

The fourth and final series event for 2019, being held November 21st, is titled Wage & Hour Mistakes You Never Knew You Were Making. At this event you can walk through some of the more common mistakes employers make without realizing they’re doing so and learn how to correct and/or prevent these issues.
