“This Chamber is unapologetically pro-business,” said Bryan K. Stephens, President and CEO, Hampton Roads Chamber, as he delivered opening remarks to those in attendance. Stephens thanked the legislators for their hard work and all they do in representing constituents and citizens of Hampton Roads as well as the Commonwealth.

“The Hampton Roads Chamber is the voice of business for all of Hampton Roads,” said Barry DuVal, President and CEO, Virginia Chamber, during the Hampton Roads Chamber Legislative Reception. “The Chamber is a valuable contributor to the prosperity of this region.”

Most of the local Delegates and Senators from the Virginia General Assembly were with the Hampton Roads Chamber at the 16th annual Legislative Reception on September 18 at the Harbor Club in Norfolk.

Attendees had an opportunity to mingle and network with legislators from across the Commonwealth about important issues and agendas for the 2020 General Assembly Session.

Member Spotlight Sponsors Dominion Energy and Ørsted proceeded to address Virginia Governor Ralph Northam’s recent executive order setting a goal for the state to produce electricity using renewable energy by 2050. Dominion Energy and Ørsted have recently partnered to construct renewable energy power for all of Coastal Virginia through the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project. “This is the first step for new energy projects in Virginia,” said Katharine Bond, Senior Policy Director, Dominion Energy. “This is also a tremendous economic opportunity for the region,” said Bond.

The two sponsors showed a brief video outlining the construction of the wind turbines they are building offshore. Dominion Energy anticipates the CVOW project to deploy in 2020. “Ørsted is the global leader in offshore wind,” said Hayes Framme, Government Relations and Communications Manager, Ørsted. “This project is the gateway to producing offshore wind energy in the Commonwealth,” Framme said.

Following Bond and Framme’s remarks, Senator Lynwood Lewis, Jr. spoke as the Honorary Chair. “We as legislators depend on a vital and active Chamber of Commerce as we make policy decisions in Richmond,” said Lewis. He continued, “We are very fortunate to have one of the greatest chambers here in Hampton Roads.” Lewis went on to say legislators must continue supporting and actively participating with the Chamber, as the Chamber helps shape policy decisions in the business community.

The Hampton Roads Chamber is proud to work with the region’s General Assembly Delegation to provide leadership in articulating business viewpoints in the public arena. The Chamber strives to maintain a healthy business environment and improve the region’s quality of life.

“The chamber serves as a great convener,” said Courtney Doyle, Customer Development and Marketing Director, Sentara Healthcare, and Norfolk City Councilwoman, Ward 2, following the Legislative Reception. “I appreciate these events. They’re valuable and give me a chance to talk to people from across the Commonwealth as well as Hampton Roads that I otherwise wouldn’t see as often.”
