On August 20, the Hampton Roads Chamber participated in the exciting grand opening of the light rail system, The Tide, in Norfolk. The Chamber hosted activities at the Civic Plaza Station, which included food, entertainment, arts and crafts and giveaways. The Community Marching Band of Portsmouth captivated the crowds.
Norfolk City Manager, Marcus Jones, joined the Chamber’s Norfolk Division Board of Director’s in greeting riders of The Tide at the Civic Plaza Station. More than 75,000 riders took advantage of the free fares during The Tide’s opening weekend. The rail line extends 7.4 miles from the Eastern Virginia Medical Center complex east through downtown Norfolk, adjacent to I-264 to Newtown Road. Eleven stations provide access to destinations to cultural, financial and entertainment centers.
The Chamber would like to thank vendors: Brickhouse Diner, Jimmy John’s, A1 Party Faces, Dance City USA, and People to People International Hampton Roads Student Chapter, for their support and participation at the Civil Plaza Station. A special thank you to The Palace on Plume who in addition to providing food, donated 100 book bags filled with schools supplies. These bags were given out to children at the Civil Plaza Station.
