Rep. Scott Taylor and his Democratic challenger, Elaine Luria, used the first of two debates before the Nov. 6 election to continue trading the kinds of biting criticisms that have filled the airwaves for months in the form of TV attack ads.
Taylor, a freshman Republican, and Luria, a first-time candidate, sparred most directly over health care, taxes and their campaigns' behavior. Taylor, clearly upset with the tone of some ads, also vowed to take legal action after the election.
Taylor, a former Virginia Beach state legislator and Navy SEAL, and Luria, a Norfolk businesswoman and retired Navy officer, are competing for a two-year term representing the 2nd Congressional District. They debated at the Cavalier Hotel before a paying crowd for a Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce luncheon.
