LEAD Hampton Roads, a program of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, presented the 11th annual State of the Region address on October 6 at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott and on October 12 at Newport News Marriott at City Center. More than 800 business and community leaders and elected officials in total attended the events to hear the presenter Dr. James Koch, Board of Visitors Professor of Economics and President Emeritus of Old Dominion University.
Dr. Koch said that in the next 5-10 years, the region will not see a lot of economic growth. The three main issues facing the area are defense spending, transportation, and rising water levels. The State of the Region address covered the recent announcement of the Joint Forces Command closure, transportation, the port, tourism, the housing market, and jobs.
