The Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce kicked off its quarterly Professional Women’s Leadership Luncheon Series on October 4 at the Holiday Inn Virginia Beach-Norfolk Hotel and Conference Center. The first speaker in the series was Colleen Barrett, Chairman Emerita, former President and Corporate Secretary of Southwest Airlines and co-author of “Lead with LUV,” which she co-authored with Ken Blanchard (“The One Minute Manager”).
Nearly 400 business and community leaders were in attendance to hear Barrett’s message. Barrett participated in a book signing before and after the luncheon.
In a dialogue format, WTKR NewsChannel 3 anchor, Barbara Ciara, interviewed Barrett about why leading with love is the most powerful way to lead. Barrett explained that her method of leadership is “not rocket science.” “It’s no more complicated than practicing the golden rule every day,” she said. She added that Southwest puts customer service first, saying that they “are a customer service company that happens to fly airplanes.” Barrett also discussed how leading with love and respecting employees can help managers achieve unprecedented business performance.
Catherine Giordano, President and CEO of Knowledge Information Solutions, Inc., won the door prize drawing, two Southwest tickets to “paradise.”
The next luncheon in the series will be held on Tuesday, February 14, 2012. The speaker will be Anne DeLaney, author of “Politics for Dummies.”
