“When it comes to promoting the economy in Virginia and bringing in jobs, the number one thing I believe in is workforce development,” said Virginia Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam. Northam addressed local business leaders and members at the Hampton Roads Chamber Friday, September 22nd. Economic and workforce development were topics of focus throughout his remarks. “We have some very good tools in Virginia such as GoVirginia, the Angle Fund and the VA Research Fund” Northam said “but we need to improve on identifying those 21st century jobs and preparing the workforce for these jobs.”
Northam, the Democratic nominee in Virginia's gubernatorial race, offered insight on his campaign platforms and touched on additional topics of early childhood education, transportation and business inclusivity. His objectives for the Hampton Roads region specifically included investing in the port, improving the roads, bridges and tunnels and attracting new outside businesses.
When asked about Amazon and the possibility of its expansion in Hampton Roads Northam said, “We are negotiating with Amazon and we are optimistic.”
The Chamber continues to be an impactful advocate as we welcome all the candidates running for Governor and Lieutenant Governor to come and share their ideas and solutions on matters impacting the community and region.
