What are your business's core values, goals, and overall mission?

Overall Mission/Vision Statement:

Our mission at Farm Fresh always will be to serve our customers better than anyone else. We will provide our customers with value through our products and services, committing ourselves to providing the quality, variety and convenience they expect.

Our success requires us to trust in our employees, respect their individual contributions and make a commitment to their continued development. This environment will allow us to attract the best people and provide opportunities through which they can achieve personal and professional satisfaction. We will strive to be the best place to work in the industry.

Our commitment is to support the communities in which our employees and customers live and work. We will use our time and resources to preserve our role as a partner, neighbor and friend.

Farm Fresh Vision Statement

“Farm Fresh is the favorite neighborhood food and drug retailer in every community we serve. Our team members provide friendly and helpful service to our guests and deliver the highest standards of freshness and quality at competitive prices.”

Core Values:

Our success depends on the strength of our brand. Our ability to deliver on our promise every day to deliver a consistent customer experience is critical.  Our core values serve as guide posts to keeping our team operating within the organization framework outlined for the business, which include caring for each other, caring for our customers, caring for our community and caring for our business partners. As such, we focus our core values on teamwork, an attitude of “customers first”; operational thrift so that we can pass on benefits to our customers; accountability for everyone to own their results; a “focus forward” mentality; and, rewarding results.

Share some unique facts and business history? What makes your business stand out?

Founded as a neighborhood grocery store in 1957, Farm Fresh is headquartered locally in Virginia Beach and is the only regional supermarket chain that can claim it was ‘born and raised’ here in Hampton Roads. As such, Farm Fresh has a vested interest in the well-being of the communities we have served for decades.

From the very beginning, community involvement has been an important part of Farm Fresh. Today, our company is involved in many facets of the community, but we focus our major efforts on four pillars:

  • Education – support of local schools through our “123-4 for the Community” Program
  • Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD) Cancer Control program
  • Military
  • Hunger Relief: helping to feed people in need through our local food banks.

What products or services do you offer companies or individuals?

Farm Fresh is a full service grocery store.  We pride ourself on providing our customers with competitively-priced products, clean stores, one-stop shopping services, and a large selection of high quality private label, national, regional and local brands.  We offer full-line catering services for large and small venues and FTD floral capabilities (top 100 FTD providers in the country) to service needs across the country. Additionally, we offer comprehensive pharmacy services and health and wellness programs at most store locations.  Some store locations also offer fuel stations, Starbucks and Chartway Federal Credit Union banking services.

What are the greatest obstacles and/or challenges that your business has faced? How have you and your business overcome them?

There are many challenges that all businesses have to overcome and it’s no different at Farm Fresh.  For us, the challenges we are following most closely these days include:

  • Changing competition: So many businesses other than supermarkets now sell food, which creates a channel-blur for our customers. An increase in overall selection and more focused competition is a constant in the business now.  At the end of the day though, we believe that providing a great customer experience will win the sale.
  • Changing Marketing and Consumer Habits: Technology (smartphones, social media, texting, email and other communication channels) makes it easier for businesses and individuals to get their messages out, but the fluid nature of technology makes figuring out the right marketing channels an important ongoing priority.  Additionally, customers today have more shopping options than ever and are more likely to shop multiple outlets than in the past. Identifying what our customers want and doing the best possible job of providing it for them will make a difference in our company’s future.

Solving these and other challenges require everyone on our team to be focused on doing the right things - for our customers, our communities, our team members and our shareholders - and doing them right!

At Farm Fresh, we proudly provide our customers with the best products on the shelves including national brands and our high-quality and affordable private label products. Our combined expertise in grocery and pharmacy operations provides us with a strong platform for sustainable success.  We are focused on driving a relevant shopping experience that is easier, fun and engaging for our customers, and our store directors are empowered to ensure that the store reflects neighborhood preferences and serves as a conduit for its community interests.

What accomplishments are you most proud of?

In its history, Farm Fresh has seen and experienced many changes and worked through many challenges. Through the loyalty of our team members, our customers and our community partners, Farm Fresh has demonstrated that it can stand on its own as a locally-based, regional chain and continue to compete against other big-box chains.  Most recently we have been focused on re-establishing our brand to be the brand that Farm Fresh built its reputation on and the things that matter most to our customers: freshness and quality in the products and services we offer, clean stores, friendly and engaging store teams, and being good neighbors in all of the communities we serve.

We have remodeled 11 stores in the last 14 months and have more scheduled over the next year. Our reputation for being community-focused is strengthening as we continue to invest more physical time and energy in our communities. We also continue to focus on opportunities to contribute financially to organizations in need and serve as a conduit for our customers to exercise their philanthropy.

I am very proud of our team and what they have accomplished these last two years. The team has focused their efforts on being better in all areas of our business and, thanks to their efforts, we have solidified our ability to continue to provide quality product and services to our customers.

What do you see for the future of your business?

Farm Fresh is positioning itself for long term success with our team of 3,700 employees (many of whom are long term, 30+ years) who are committed to feeding families and enriching the lives of our customers.

Why are you a member of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce?

Farm Fresh has been a long time member of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce.   We feel that the Chamber is an important resource for advocacy, information and marketing exposure to enhance the economic success of the individual member businesses and the collective strength of the region.
