Employees are considered a company’s most valuable asset. Recruitment and retention techniques are vital to finding the top talent and keeping it.
Three human resources experts shared their knowledge and expertise during a seminar Sept. 26 sponsored by the Hampton Roads Chamber.
Karis Tanner, past president of Hampton Roads Society of Human Resources Management; Kelly Lane, human resources director with Casey Automotive Group; and Brian Winterstein, executive vice president and chief human resource officer for Coppermine Bakeries, were the panelists.
Finding key talent in the competitive landscape that exists today was first on the agenda.
Lane mentioned a couple of new approaches they’ve taken at Casey because technicians are in such high demand in her industry. The company uses video interviewing and texts candidates soon after an interview.
“We get so many more responses,” Lane said, noting they use Google Voice. “The texting on certain positions gives an immediate gratification. If we wait a week to get in touch with someone, a lot of times they have taken another job.”
“I think it’s about making it easy,” Tanner said. “It doesn’t matter how big or small your organization is – top talent is out there looking constantly.”
Lane also stressed the importance of communication and not letting applicants go into a “black hole.”
The panel agreed the best way to look at recruitment is by asking new hires about their experience.
“It’s all about perception,” Tanner said. “They can see you care about them as associates even if you don’t hire them.”
