What are your business's core values, goals, and overall mission?

Phillips DMC provides customized group tour itineraries throughout the region, including nearby Colonial Williamsburg, the Eastern Shore and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Our goal is to showcase the best of Coastal Virginia to every person we serve.

Phillips DMC is state certified as a SWAM (Small Women and Minority) business, a member of MPI (Meeting Planners International), and a member of ADMEI, the Association of Destination Management Executives International.

Share some unique facts and business history? What makes your business stand out?

Phillips DMC has been the local expert and host for our region for more than 35 years. The company was founded in 1978 by Marjorie Phillips and three generations later it is still a family-owned and operated business serving thousands of visitors to Hampton Roads each year. Marjorie started the business because she loved sharing the history of Hampton Roads with its visitors. What started as one woman's hobby has grown into a thriving destination management business with international clients. Phillips DMC has been called "the host of Hampton Roads."

What are the greatest obstacles and/or challenges that your business has faced? How have you and your business overcome them?

One of the greatest challenges we face is having four different business lines: corporate and convention groups, cruise ships, military reunions and receptive services. With that comes four different types of clients. We are a small team and everyone has to wear many hats; "job description" doesn't have many parameters here! We do what must be done in order to best serve our clients. The key is recruiting talented individuals who posses a strong work ethic, yet who make the office environment fun. A friendly disposition is key to doing what we do so well. As we have expanded our team recently we have focused on finding people who fit our corporate culture. Our clients come to Coastal Virginia for business and pleasure. Whether just in our region for the day as a cruise ship passenger or staying here for a week during a convention, we are the hospitable host that will hopefully bring them back to Hampton Roads again and again!

What accomplishments are you most proud of?

We all agree that when a 2,000 passenger cruise ship sets sail after a full-day of activities in Hampton Roads which includes visits to Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Colonial Williamsburg, we feel very proud. Planning excursions from dolphin watching and kayaking to museum visits and Naval Base tours with more than 22 motor coaches and tour guides is a logistical puzzle that takes countless hours of planning. To see it all come together and the visitors enjoy their experience is incredibly rewarding.

We also are proud of the military heritage, the rich history and the arts and cultural diversity of Hampton Roads. Day in and day out we are creating proposals to attract groups to our region and because we have such vibrant, diverse and unique attractions and sites, it's easy to make Hampton Roads a fascinating destination. We can offer a tour of the largest naval installation in our country at Naval Base Norfolk, a private viewing of artisan glass blowing at The Chrysler, sea kayaking in Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, and a visit to Olde Towne Portsmouth with buildings dating to 1752, just to name a few. Hampton Roads is such an incredible place to visit and we are proud to have been showcasing it to national and international visitors for more than 35 years.

What do you see for the future of your business?

We want to return to serving more corporate and convention groups. As the economy continues to improve, our hope is more groups will choose Hampton Roads as their meeting destination. Our company will work tirelessly to ensure their experience in our region is memorable. We are also excited to have two hotel properties--The Main in downtown Norfolk, and the historic Cavalier Hotel--open and reopen respectively. That, plus a new Waterside Live, has our region poised for explosive growth in the travel and tourism industry and we are excited to be a part of it!

Why are you a member of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce?

We have been member of the Chamber for over a dozen years. We love the camaraderie of the organization and as a small business we value the small business education, resources and networking the Chamber offers. We have our SWAM certification and appreciate the Chamber's support of SWAM certified businesses. The State of the Region event is always something we look forward to as it brings together all the leaders in our community. We also have enjoyed the Women's Leadership Luncheon Series and have made some valuable connections at these events.
