What are your business's core values, goals, and overall mission?:
At Creative Music & Entertainment, our core value is people! We believe that each person was created differently. Yes, you read that right; equally, yes, but differently. We each have our tastes in music, our own physical make up, our own pursuits and desires and so forth. Therefore, our mission is for everyone to experience and to explore music and the arts according to how they were created! We don't take a cookie-cutter approach; meaning, we don't force people into our own pre-set model in anything we do.
Share some unique facts and business history? What makes your business stand out?:
We began as one person teaching music lessons going from house to house on the Peninsula several years ago after teaching on and off for 20 years. After relocating to Chesapeake and going full-time in teaching in 2014 with 35 students in one location, Creative Music has exploded into 5 locations, offering instruction in voice and every instrument, as well as providing DJ and Karaoke services and live entertainment for all events. We now have a staff of about 12 instructors.
What makes us stand out is that we take a positive, people-first approach, rather than try to sell people products or mold them into how we think they should be.
What products or services do you offer companies or individuals?:
We offer music lessons in singing, guitar, piano, drums, ukulele, bass, woodwinds, brass, and strings. We also offer instruction in drama and acting as well as painting, drawing, photography and interior design.
In the summer of 2016, we expanded from Creative Music to Creative Music & Entertainment, offering DJ & Karaoke services as well as live entertainment for parties, weddings,
anniversaries, reunions, corporate picnics/events, and any kind of other ceremony or event that one could imagine. We had already been doing these type of events for years and now had the personnel in place to offer it in the public arena.
What are the greatest obstacles and/or challenges that your business has faced? How have you and your business overcome them?:
The greatest obstacles we have faced are getting the word out about us. We offer the best and lowest prices out there by far. The message of who we are-positive, encouraging, and affordable-has been a slow one to spread. We are in competition with some pretty established music schools and entertainment companies. Many people are likely to go to the "established" organizations because they are there or because the come up in the Google searches.
We have overcome them by our great reviews on social media and through our extremely satisfied customers referring others to us. We have grown the way we have because people who come to us love what we do and how we do it.
What accomplishments are you most proud of?:
I am most proud of the students we work with and how they have grown personally and musically. We don't just invest in the musically, but want to help them grow to be better people. We don't just teach kids, by the way. We teach from 3 to 103! Our goal is to create the best people that we can. We have seen such incredible development in some that it would go far beyond the scope of this article.
I am also proud that the web company Thumbtack.com has voted us "Best Of" for Lessons two years in a row for 2015 and 2016. Those are based on customer reviews! That means people are happy with how we are instructing them and caring for them.
What do you see for the future of your business?:
I see a continued, positive emphasis on teaching and caring for the future musicians of America as we move forward. As the word spreads of our encouraging approach and our reasonable prices, people will be drawn to our business.
Why are you a member of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce?:
We are a member of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce because Creative Music believes in supporting and promoting local businesses. From the beginning, we have encouraged our local business clients to leave their cards on our front display. On our websites, we promote local businesses. The Chamber is the best way to gather and promote each other. The synergy created between each other can only help spark great things between us!
