Hampton Roads Chamber Presents the Suffolk State of the City address on May 18, 2021.

“Our theme for this event has been, together…we’re moving forward.” Mayor Michael Duman said in his first Suffolk state of the City.  “The City of Suffolk aims only to look back to see how far the City has come and to continue to look forward.”

The Hampton Roads Chamber presents the State of the City Series each year as we work to be an inspiring ignitor, impactful advocate, regional collaborator, and powerful economic partner.

Mayor Duman took a moment  to thank the Suffolk City leaders and City workers for their “unwavering commitment to the residents of our community; operated with flexibility while facing constantly changing circumstances, and remained optimistic knowing that we would get through these difficult times together.”

Mayor Duman shared a COVID response video to highlight the great things the City of Suffolk employees did to keep the City going.  This included mention of various partnerships within the community that provide food for those in need; financial assistance; and COVID testing/vaccine clinic. “This city may experience hardship, but we are determined to make our community and the health of our residents and businesses even better than before.”

The Suffolk Together video highlighted the City of Suffolk’s accomplishments, financial stability, economic growth, diversity, and the vast resources that create a positive outlook.

Mayor Duman announced the expansion of the Gogreen Farms and Farmhouse, a locally founded and operated food distribution company. “Gogreen farms has created a special position within Hampton Roads by putting fresh produce from Virginia farms on the menu for students through a number of Hampton Roads school systems.”

In closing, Duman expressed, "moving forward; we must not rest on our laurels. We must continue to promote inclusivity, equality, and diversity. We must never forget that it is everyone's desire to live in a safe, healthy, and hopeful community. We must continue to promote and reinforce the relationship of mutual respect enjoyed by our citizens and law enforcement personnel."

Robin Cooke, President of Townebank Suffolk/Portsmouth, the Series Presenting Sponsor, shared her pride in those who have come together this past year.  "This past year has been an incredibly challenging one for local businesses. I applaud the Hampton Roads Chamber for stepping up to help in the midst of an unprecedented economic storm. TowneBank was honored to help local businesses through the PPP – Paycheck Protection Program. We were able to support 6,700 businesses with more than 1.2 billion of credible funding.”

Kate Brinn, President, Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center, and Harbor View Medical Campus, shared updates Maryview Medical Center has in the works. "Over the last year, Bon Secours has invested nearly a million dollars in clinical capital at Harborview in our new Virginia Orthopedics and Spine specialist location on Centerville Lane. These investments in technology and comprehensive medical treatment for the Suffolk and Western Hampton Roads Communities will better allow us to treat the whole person; mind, body, and spirit."

Dr. Michael Genco, Vice President of Medical Affairs, Sentara Obici Hospital "2020, brought some really exciting developments for the hospital. First and foremost, I am very proud of the partnership that we started building and continued building in our community this year. Working with the Virginia Department of Health to deliver COVID testing and education to our patients and the community. Partnering with Temple Bethel, Delegate Jenkins, and many others to provide COVID vaccinations to our community members all are things I am very proud of personally.”
