“Our future is bright…on the right side of the river," said Portsmouth Mayor John L. Rowe, Jr. when asked about the future of the city. Find out what exactly makes that future so bright as you join the Hampton Roads Chamber in welcoming newly elected mayor John L. Rowe, Jr., at his first ever Portsmouth State of the City Address on Wednesday, April 19 at the Renaissance Portsmouth Hotel & Conference Center. During his address, Mayor Rowe will provide business leaders, city employees, and citizens of Hampton Roads with a reflection on Portsmouth’s past year, and his insight and expectations for the city for the future.
Mayor Rowe will focus some of his remarks on the benefits of Portsmouth's waterways as the relate to both the military and the business community. Portsmouth is the state's "only official Coast Guard City," said the mayor, and home to the largest privately-owned marine container terminal in the United States, Virginia International Gateway, which "is currently undergoing a $320 million investment which would double the capacity of the terminal."
As a Portsmouth native, Mayor Rowe has surrounded himself with over four and a half decades of leadership and administrative experience, serving various roles in economic development authorities, Chamber of Commerce boards, and a hospital board. Mayor Rowe looks to continue serving his home city of Portsmouth and create a vibrant future with flourishing economic and business development in the years to come. "Portsmouth’s historical and nautical significance positions us as a major contributor to the nation, the Commonwealth, and Hampton Roads," said Mayor Rowe. Join us on April 19th to find out the details behind this bright future for Portsmouth.
