Additional information about CISofHR

Communities In Schools of Hampton Roads (CISofHR) is part of the nation’s largest and most effective dropout prevention organization. Founded in 1977, the mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Locally, CISofHR has been around since 2012 serving public schools in Hampton, Portsmouth, Norfolk, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach. Despite the nation’s higher than ever 83% graduation rate, more than half a million students drop out of school every year (National Center for Education Statistics, 2017). Poverty is a major contributing factor. According to the most recent data, 24% of public school students attend high-poverty schools (National Center for Education Statistics, 2017) – almost doubled since 2000. As the number of these schools continues to grow, the need for Integrated Student Supports (ISS) becomes more important than ever. Schools in poor neighborhoods often lack tutors, computers, laboratories, after-school programs, summer programs, and extracurricular activities. Not surprisingly, these are the school where kids drop out the most, perpetuating the cycle of poverty for another generation. Teachers are doing their best, but they simply lack the time and resources required to meet the needs of low-income students. CISofHR provides signs of hope. CISofHR matches underserved students with the specific resources they need to beat the odds and stay in school. Children living in poverty have the support they need to stay in school and achieve in life. Driven by a belief that poverty should not be a predictor of success, we connect the power of local community resources to the students who need them most. We work alongside educators to help every student we meet see and activate their potential on a path to graduation – and beyond.
