Share some unique facts and business history? What makes your business stand out?

Insercorp was founded as Bradshaw-Kimbrel Technology Group, LLC in 2007 with only $100.00 from each of its two original founders, Tim Bradshaw and Josh Kimbrel. In early 2008 the company opened its first office in the Franklin Business Incubator. By the end of 2009, Tim Bradshaw acquired complete ownership of the company. In April 2010 the State Corporation Commission approved the Articles of Entity Conversion, officially incorporating and changing its name to Insercorp LTD.

What are the greatest obstacles and/or challenges that your business has faced? How have you and your business overcome them?

While there have been many challenges the company has had to overcome there are a couple major challenges which truly tested our resolve.

In 2012 we were developing a suite of custom web-based applications for a client in specialized education which quickly became our top client, generating more than 60% of our annual revenue. We had hired key personnel with relevant experience and had delivered the first  builds of the application when new Federal laws had been passed allowing much larger organizations from northern states to acquire our client. By 2013 the project was put on hold for several months and eventually scrapped, forcing layoffs and a change in direction for the company after suffering a major loss of revenue. I was able to balance the budget by cutting expenses in all areas starting with my own pay first. We refocused all efforts on our core product, iPlasmaCMS2, optimizing development and delivery processes as well as releasing a new interface. In 2014 we moved into our own commercial office building at 300 N Main Street in Downtown Franklin, replacing high rent with a lower mortgage and using the opportunity to gain publicity and start growing our revenue once more. To reduce expenses further and maximize my productivity I assigned myself living quarters in the office.

Our new model was successful in producing three years of back-to-back exponential revenue growth leading to a grand celebration of our 10-year anniversary in 2017, including a dinner for our clients and supporters and a community block party with live entertainment. With the growth trend continuing, 2018 was shaping up to be an even bigger year until an unexpected disaster struck the very heart of Insercorp.

In February 2018, just 3 months after my grandmother had passed away and a month after I totalled my car hitting a deer, my first vacation in 11 years was cut short when I received news that my office had been burglarized. I returned to find that over $25,000 worth of business equipment, including computers, monitors, and flat panel TVs, had been stolen. Adding insult to injury, over $35,000 worth of my personal property had been taken as well, including lifelong collectibles, rare gifts from around the world, and almost anything of value. The property had been ransacked and we lost a couple of good employees in the process. For the first time since starting my business I felt hopeless.

The next day, as I literally began picking up the pieces, my two managers who had been with the company the longest showed up.  “What are you doing here?” I remember asking them, still disillusioned from the previous day.

“We’re here to help,” they responded, cleaning up debris and putting things back in place.  It was their loyalty and their commitment to the company and our clients, even when all hope seemed to be lost, that inspired me to keep going.

Fortunately the services to our clients weren’t interrupted because none of our web servers are on-premises and their security was not compromised (although we changed every password of every system to be on the safe side). Our insurance was able to cover the damages to the property as well as replace the business equipment and we were able to get back online with huge thanks to Adam Foxwell of Gray Fox Electronics who advanced us the computers and set our network back up.

Unfortunately, my personal property was not covered and when it was all said and done we had lost 3 months of production along with our momentum and growth. In the aftermath, I initially had split my focus trying to find clues to track down my property but eventually I had to make the choice to move forward and put all of my efforts into regaining the ground that the company had lost in the total loss burglary.

2018 ended in a loss in revenue compared to 2017, causing our team to work even harder in 2019 to move the company back on track. Just as we were scaling back into a high growth  trend problems with one of the data centers in mid-2019 resulted in our first major outage which our team was able to overcome while retaining 100% of affected clients.

By the end of 2019, 100 to 120 hour work weeks having become regular for me, our perseverance and dedication brought us back on track with our previous growth trajectory, closing out our second best year in revenue and positioning Insercorp for a successful 2020.

What accomplishments are you most proud of?

I am of the belief that “the best is yet to come”, however looking back over the past 12 years there are certainly quite a few significant accomplishments that I am proud of.

One of our greatest accomplishments was celebrating the company’s 10-year anniversary in 2017. For a self-funded startup with no outside investment making it past the 10-year mark gave renewed purpose and offered dignified recognition for its staying power.

Creating opportunities and launching career paths for many who have worked for the company over the years is certainly something to be proud of, especially when the opportunities perpetuated by Insercorp have helped ignite the entrepreneurial spirit in those who otherwise may not have seen their callings.

Seeing the growth and success of our clients over the years is another great testament to our own continued success, especially when many have continued to use our services for over a decade. Our innovative and collaborative approaches have contributed to many awards being earned by clients, including top honors for the websites we have built for fairs, radio stations, civic organizations, and even the Hampton Roads Chamber winning the 2010 Silver ACE Award for Communication Excellence. Of course we are even more proud of the most recent version  of the Hampton Roads Chamber’s website which we launched earlier this year.

What do you see for the future of your business?

There are a number of opportunities for Insercorp to accelerate its growth, including positioning our core product, iPlasmaCMS2, in the global marketplace to reach critical mass. Our strategic advances will foster opportunities for investment capital to simultaneously expand our development team and production capacity.

As we build on our successes we will continue to leverage our partnerships to provide more integrated services and streamlined solutions to our existing clients while expanding our client base both in Hampton Roads and throughout other markets across North America, Europe, and Africa.

Ultimately, Insercorp will be recognized as a worldwide leader in digital marketing and web technology services with a diversified portfolio of products, services, and clients.
