On February 29, 2019, the Tidewater African Cultural Alliance (TACA) is teaming up with MacArthur Center to celebrate Black History Month. Afro Mania, a free event from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.., celebrates African culture through dance, music, literature and interactive displays and activities. This year’s feature country is Kenya.
TACA’s mission is to bring Africans and others in the community together through outreach, service and cultural events, much like Afro Mania. The Saturday, family friendly event takes place in Center Court where guests will be immersed in all things African including a fashion show featuring fashions from Aronsé́ Amadé and founder Bertha Lawani. Bertha started her company after becoming the mother of her third child. Her grandmother in Nigeria gifted her the cloth that would start it all. She rediscovered the cloth when her grandmother passed at the age of 114. Bertha says about her grandmother “She was my strength—my example, my mentor. And I was her Amadé, the ancient name she bestowed to me.”
During the event, there will be performances by five of area high schools including:
• Salem High School African American Cultural Society Members present Mansa Musa
• Cox High School Step Team – Envision performance
• Ocean Lakes High School BSU to present Francis Allotey and Thomas P. Lecky
• Tallwood High School African -Caribbean Club presentation on Nelson Mandela and Katherine Johnson
• Governor’s School for the Arts vocalists perform the Kenyan National Anthem
Guests will also enjoy an Afro Fitness demonstration and a Lipala dance demonstration by TACA founder, Rita Cohen.
Come enjoy the sights and sounds of many African countries at Afro Mania. More information about the event can be found HERE.
