Successful Contest Supports Entrepreneurs with Fully-Funded Pop-Ups

This summer, MacArthur Center’s Battle of the Pop-Up was so successful that the property is pleased to announce a second Battle of the Pop-Up contest. Now through Friday, July 20, MacArthur Center is encouraging entrepreneurs to submit innovative retail concepts for a chance to win an entire brick-and-mortar store at the center for six months - rent free! The prize package is valued up to $25,000 and - in addition to free space - includes signage, visual merchandising and fixtures.“With the tremendous success of this spring’s Battle of the Pop-Up and the exposure the winner has received, we realized it was time to expand and further develop this wonderful program,” said Karen Husselbee, MacArthur Center’s marketing director.

For All Handkind, winner of the spring pop-up contest, has enjoyed a warm welcome from our shoppers.“The team at MacArthur, the store owners here at the center, and the entire community has welcomed us with open arms,” said Gayle Forman, one of three For All Handkind founders. “This has been a very rewarding experience and we’re thrilled with the response we’ve had for the locally handcrafted products we sell and our classes and demonstrations. It’s been a delight.”

For All Handkind carefully curates products from artisans in and around the Hampton Roads area. The store offers gifts, jewelry, handblown glassware and home decor. Five percent of each artist’s sales are donated to a charity of their choice.

Husselbee says with the success of the first pop-up launch that the property is looking forward to the next round of ideas. “We’re excited to see the ideas we get for this upcoming holiday and winter season,” she commented.

To enter, participants must be prepared to obtain a business license and operate their store during mall hours from November 1, 2018 through April 20, 2019. Entries will be judged on business strategy, concept creativity, and likelihood of profitability among other criteria. The deadline for entries is July 20. There is no cost to enter.
