Camp set to launch new medication aide program
~Classes may start as early as late summer~

Camp Community College will offer a new program that will train individuals to begin work soon thereafter in the healthcare field as a medication aide.

“Since this program was also approved for the Workforce Credentials Grant, it will be offered as one of our FastForward programs,” said Workforce Development Director Angela Lawhorne. “That means that the students enrolling in the program get more funding toward tuition.”

Dawn Womble, who is the Fast Track Healthcare program coordinator, has taught the course for nearly nine years and will be instructor for the program at Camp.

“We will be offering in-person and hybrid classes,” Womble said. “As soon as the assisted living site can allow us in for clinical training, we can begin.”

Registered Medication aides are certified nursing assistants who perform medication administration safely and effectively. According to O*Net, the projected number of job openings from 2016 to 2026 is 5,460 and the field is expected to grow by 21 percent over that same 10-year period.

The 68-hour training curriculum at Camp is for those who want to work in an assisted living facility and successful completion of the program will qualify students to take the state Registered Medication Aide (RMA) exam.

“We continue to develop programs that meet local business and industry needs, and offer our students a rewarding career,” said Camp President Dr. Dan Lufkin. “This program is another example of how we are meeting that demand.”
