Share some unique facts and business history? What makes your business stand out?

Our History -

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® started in the early 1980s as a way for two brothers to make extra money while they were in high school. Now, 30 years later, the company has grown to more than 320 locations worldwide.

Brothers Brig Sorber and Jon Sorber started moving people in the Lansing area using an old pickup truck. They had their mom, Mary Ellen Sheets, develop a logo to put in a weekly community newspaper. That stick-men logo still rests on every truck, sign and advertisement.

After the brothers left for college, Sheets continued to field calls for moving services while she also worked a full-time data processing job with the State of Michigan. In 1985, she decided to make things official by purchasing a 14-foot truck for $350 and hiring a pair of movers. That $350 is the only capital Sheets has ever invested in the company.

Her experience with data analysis, combined with her commitment to customer service, earned her a spot on a 1988 graduate business panel at Michigan State University. When a fellow panelist suggested she franchise her little company, Sheets decided to consult with an attorney on the matter.

Nationwide Expansion-

In 1989, Sheets awarded the first location outside of Michigan to her daughter, Melanie Bergeron. The office was in Atlanta, Ga.

When the company reached 39 franchises, Sheets asked Bergeron to assume the role of company president while she pursued a seat in the Michigan State Senate. Bergeron is now chair of the board. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®'s long track record of aggressive growth continues under Bergeron's progressive leadership and keen business strategies. Bergeron's accomplishments have been showcased on the cover of Franchising World magazine and in numerous other publications, including Franchise Times.

Brig and Jon Sorber eventually returned to team up with their mom and older sister in the mid-1990s. Brig Sorber now serves as the chief executive officer, and Jon Sorber is executive vice president.

In August 2012, former Chief Operating Officer Randy Shacka was promoted to president of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®. Randy joined the team in 2001 as an intern and has since held several roles, including Franchise Development Specialist, Director of Operations, Chief Development Officer (CDO) and Chief Operating Officer (COO). This marks the first time in the history of the company the title of President has been held by a person outside of the Sorber family.

Moving into the Future-

That first truck Sheets bought in 1985 has now multiplied into a fleet of more than 2,100 trucks. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® is the nation's largest franchised local moving company. Customers benefit from having trained, uniformed movers who are insured and bonded to handle any home and business moving tasks.

The company has come a long way – and logged a lot of miles – since Sheets sketched the first "stick-men." The TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® system continues to pave the way for future growth and innovation, while remaining rooted in the core principles of exceeding customers' expectations.

Karen Miller began working for TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® International in 2006 in the accounting department.  In April of 2015 something unexpected happened: she became a business owner.  Now a franchisee for TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® - the Michigan-based moving company with locations in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and Ireland- the Lansing native recently moved to Hampton Roads as owner of the company's Norfolk franchise, which serves the Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Chesapeake areas (of course we'll do moves anywhere in the U.S. though).

Boxes & Supplies:

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® offers a wide selection of competitively priced moving boxes and packing supplies including tape, packing paper, markers, paper pads, bubble wrap, and stretch wrap (please refrain from popping bubbles until your move is complete!).

Free local box delivery is also available at many locations with a minimum $50 box and packing supply order. We'll give you a full refund for any boxes you don't use (or keep them and construct a totally awesome fort for your kids!).

Remember as you pack — the heavier the item, the smaller the box.

What are the greatest obstacles and/or challenges that your business has faced? How have you and your business overcome them?

Our TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Norfolk franchise opened up in April. Mid May we experienced a massive increase in business and more customers calling than we had planned on providing our services for, which is a great problem to have! We took a moment and decided that instead of rushing for growth and more revenue, that we would focus on quality over quantity. We worked hard to train new crews and staff, so that we could start to take on more customers than originally expected.  Now business is booming, and we are confident that we are exceeding our customer’s expectations on a daily basis!

What accomplishments are you most proud of?

Not only has TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Norfolk surpassed our revenue goals for the first three months of business, but we are extremely happy to announce that we have kept our customers very satisfied along the way!  In June we received a letter from Randy Shacka, President for TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® International congratulating us on our team having a 100% referral rate for the month of May 2015.  May was the first full month that TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Norfolk was opened!  Randy goes on to congratulated us on providing the excellent service our customers expect!

What do you see for the future of your business?

When asked what Karen envisions for the future of her company, she doesn't hesitate in her answer: "I want to exceed our customers' expectations on all levels, making their moves just as seamless as possible."

Why are you a member of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce?

We believe being active in the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce is an effective business strategy because most of all consumers believe that such companies use good business practices, are reputable, care about their customers, and are involved in the community.  If a company shows that it is highly involved in its local Chamber, consumers are  more likely to think that its products stack up better against its competition.

We also want to take part in any networking events that would introduce us to other businesses in the Hampton Roads area.  Not only do we want to make those business connections to help business strive, we want to give back to and refer other consumers about Chamber businesses within our community!
