Alert – Urgent Hospitality Industry Issues



Members are urged to take three minutes to contact State Senators and Delegates and urge each to VOTE “NO” on HB557, SB203, & SB412. Click on the blue link located at the end of this email to take action. You may also make phone calls.

HB557 (Tata – R- 85th ) – Provides that the requirement that the school calendar begin after Labor Day may be waived by the Board of Education, provided the school board certifies that it meets one of the good cause requirements in current law.

SB 203 (Blevins – R- 14th) Allows local school boards, for years in which Labor Day falls on September 5 or later to set the school calendar so that the first day students are required to attend school shall be no earlier than one week before labor day.

SB 412 (Holtzman Vogel – R - 27th) Makes local school boards responsible for setting the school calendar and determining the opening of the school year and eliminates the post-Labor Day opening requirement and "good cause" scenarios for which the Board of Education might grant waivers of this requirement.

Discussion Points:

  • These bills have the potential to effectively “shut down” our hospitality and travel industry during the month of August.
  • These bills will have a significant negative impact on tourism generated revenues for local and state governments (sales taxes, meals, lodging taxes)
  • Student employment would be affected.
