$15,000 in grants to local Hampton Roads teachers to support new or existing classroom projects

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – (January 6, 2020) – Langley Federal Credit Union’s Langley For Families Foundation has awarded $15,000 in grants to local Hampton Roads teachers to support new or existing classroom projects. Langley selected 30 winners from 74 applications, ranging from elementary through high school. Each recipient received a $500 grant for programs, field trips or events.

Karen Ciotta at Greenwood Elementary in Newport News plans to enhance the school garden with additional garden beds, a weather station, rain barrels and a composter. “These additions will allow students in grades K-5 to learn how to grow healthy food, taste fresh produce, promote better nutrition and develop teamwork skills,” said Ciotta. “They will also practice financial literacy by keeping accurate accounting of grant purchases and a balance of funds.”

Craddock Middle School in Portsmouth will host Techapalooza Young Women’s Leadership Conference, a mini-conference designed to develop the interests of seventh and eighth-grade girls in careers in technology, entrepreneurship and leadership. “By providing opportunities for students to pitch their business ideas, ask questions and learn from experts in the diverse field of technology, the conference will inspire these young women to carve out their own futures by creating opportunities for themselves and others,” said Jalisa Logan, teacher.

A 2018 survey from the Department of Education found that 94% of public school teachers report spending their own money on supplies, with an average of $479 each year.

“At Langley, we know it’s important to support our communities, and education is a primary component of that,” said Langley’s For Families Foundation Director Laurel Ramey. “Teachers work tirelessly throughout the year to support our children’s future, so we wanted to do something to support them.”
