NORFOLK, Va. – (February 2020) – Selden Market, located at 208 E. Main Street in Downtown Norfolk, is pleased to announce two storefront tenants are graduating from the retail incubator providing two new opportunities available for lease this spring.
Selden Market is Coastal Virginia’s best small business market featuring local shops, food, rotating pop-ups and community events. Tenants are curated for originality, vision, and quality of products and services. It offers a nurturing environment for local entrepreneurs to create and expand their businesses with affordable rents, education and a supportive peer community.
Part of the dynamic nature of a retail incubator means a rotation of businesses as owners refine their business model and find more permanent locations. Velvet Witch has recently found a new location at 619 Colonial Avenue in Norfolk that will open in April. It originally opened at Selden Market in 2017 and is moving from an incubator to a stand-alone storefront achieving the goal to increase vibrancy in Norfolk’s retail environment.
Owner Ashley Branton plans to expand the metaphysical and holistic services offered at the new store through collaborations with other local business owners to include tarot and psychic readings, aura photos, reiki massage, crystal workshops and much more.
"Selden has been an imperative part of making my dream a reality,” said Branton. “Not only has it allowed me to be a part of Norfolk in a way I never imagined, but also to build a sense of community into my business that has brought immense growth."
Surplus by Skate Supply, a mentor tenant that has also been with Selden Market for two years, will focus on renovating its flagship store at 801 Volvo Parkway in Chesapeake. The experience in Selden Market helped the company expand into new boutique skate brands and apparel and gain an even greater foothold in the regional skate community.
"Thank you to all our customers, new and old, who continue to support Skate Supply no matter where we are located,” said Trey Hill, manager. “We look forward to placing our focus back on our flagship location in Chesapeake and are still happy to be of service to anyone and everyone looking for a real skateboard shop to call their own. Cheers to the future!"
Both shops will be open at Selden Market through March 28, and both will participate in pop-ups, workshops and events in the future. Velvet Witch will be at Selden Market on May 22 from 7-10 pm for the quarterly New Moon Market.
Applications are now being reviewed for retail and services businesses for the available storefronts. The spaces rent for $300-600 a month. Food and beverage tenant applications will be accepted for future consideration. Businesses can find out more at seldenmarket.com/become-a-tenant/apply or email email@example.com with questions. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but the deadline for spring storefront spaces is March 9 at 11:59 pm.
All indicators are positive for Selden Market’s continued growth and success. Daily traffic has seen an upswing with local workers and residents stopping by for food and shopping, and a significant jump has been seen with convention and business travelers to Downtown Norfolk.
Recent and 2019 successes include:
• Storefronts have been at 100% capacity for over a year
• Average annual shop sales increased 18% from 2018 to 2019
• Richmond-based boutique, Mod & Soul, opened its 2nd location in November
• Significant increase in food and beverage vendors: The Stockpot (2nd location), Baked AF and JackEats opened in 2019, and Sydney Meers' FishPig Cafe to open in March
• S'mores Amore began selling products at Wegman's
• Vessel Craft Coffee opened a 2nd location at Norfolk City Hall
• Werther Leather Goods received a $10k CAP grant from City of Norfolk
• LOUD Accessories moved from MacArthur Mall to Selden Market
“With the increased exposure from Selden Market, my first year of sales far exceeded my best years previously, and I was able to hire part-time workers,” said Derek Shaw, owner of Werther Leather Goods. “As my business has continued to grow, the Selden Market has actually helped me have more freedom and flexibility with my schedule."
"Velvet Witch has been a part of Selden since day one, said Careyann Weinberg, Selden Market retail director. “It's going to be sad to see them and Surplus leave, but we're incredibly proud to have had them both here the last few years, and for them to continue to nurture and grow their businesses outside of the market as intended. We're eager to welcome a few fresh faces to Selden's small business community this spring, whether to jumpstart new concepts or step into the Downtown Norfolk market."
Selden Market features 11 storefront tenants in addition to multiple daily, weekly and monthly pop-up businesses. Selden Market is open to the public Tuesday - Saturday 10 am-5 pm and Sunday 11 am-5 pm. A regular schedule of special events, classes, workshops and speakers provides opportunities for one-of-a-kind experiences.
