The Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce invites you to take part in a unique Inter-Regional Visit (IRV) to the Gulf Coast of Louisiana (New Orleans) to study what offshore energy exploration might mean to our region.
As you know, the Chamber has been vocal about our position, on the pages of local newspapers and on our own website. We strongly believe there is vast potential for offshore energy to have a tremendous positive impact on our regional economy. However, as with any endeavor there are pros and cons which need to be considered. That's why we support further in-depth and careful analysis. And, while we are excited by the potential economic impact, it must be stressed we do not support exploration at the expense of the environment, the military or any other industry. We do support responsible exploration that at all times considers the safety of the environment, military operations and the impact on other industries, to include fishing and tourism.
So because of the possible impact to our economy and the jobs it may create we are excited about this trip and we want you to be a part of it! Play a role in shaping our region’s future economic landscape.
The trip will include a tour of Port Fourchon, a roundtable discussion with stake holders, a briefing at an energy headquarters, and in depth look a the economic impact of off-shore energy in Louisiana as it compares to Virginia. We will assess first-hand the opportunities, challenges and risks posed by off-shore energy options, and interact with subject matter experts from the Gulf Coast of Louisiana. Congressman Scott Rigell is a guest on this fact-finding mission.
