“A real leader achieves success through the accomplishments of their people,” said Courtney Lynch, Co Founder of Lead Star, as she addressed the audience of the Hampton Roads Chamber Professional Women’s Leadership Luncheon on February 23rd. The former United States Marine Corps officer knows the importance of great leadership development. With over 20 years of leadership experience under her belt, the Hampton Roads Chamber was honored to have Ms. Lynch as the keynote speaker, instilling her leadership knowledge and passion to more than 200 of the Hampton Roads area business leaders.
Lynch recapped her career as she noted the years spent in the United States Marine Corps taught her great leadership skills but it was not until she left the military, that she realized the potential of these skills in the civilian world. Lynch saw the need for effective leadership and had the desire to share her expertise, saying “We all need leadership in our everyday lives to be successful.” Lynch pointed out that leadership does not require a specific job title or rank,everyone can be leaders at all levels.
Since launching Lead Star in 2004, Lynch and her team has helped thousands of companies, including Fortune 500, companies in developing key players in their organizations and changing the mindset of what it is to be a leader. This focus on leadership development lead to her New York Times bestseller, Spark: How to Lead Yourself and Others to Greater Success, a leadership development book that teaches and drives success through interaction and implementation of “Seven Behaviors of a Spark”, which include:
• Act with Intent
• Be of Service
Lynch highlighted these attributes as strategic areas to improve upon for both professional and personal development.
Lynch expressed her passion for being of service when she took on the duty of caring for her elderly grandmother pointing out that the experience solidified her belief that leadership was about people “I saw the value of my leadership truly was taking care of someone else.”
Louise Edwards, senior manager of business development and planning for Bon Secours Health System said what stood out most to her was Lynch’s leadership tip to spend fifteen minutes a day in total service to others, “I will strive to implement [that] daily.”
