On February 9, the Chamber’s Portsmouth Division and Suffolk Division Boards held a special joint meeting at Bon Secours Health Center at Harbour View in Suffolk. Guest speakers were Frank Fabian, Senior Project Manager for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and Geoff Segal, Senior Vice President of Macquarie Capital, representing VDOT partner, Elizabeth River Crossings. Nearly 55 business leaders listened to Fabian and Segal provide an overview of the Mid-Town Tunnel Project and how it will affect Hampton Roads.
Fabian said, “Congestion kills us. This project will help alleviate that.” Both he and Segal said that not only will congestion lessen but it will also save drivers fuel, provide a seamless connection to I-264, improve reliability and connectivity and enhance public transportation. “This project will bring improvement to your quality of life,” Fabian said. The plan is anticipated to promote economic development and indirectly create over 1,000 jobs.
Construction will begin late this year and is expected to be completed in 2017.
