“65 percent of people thought the country was on the wrong track,” said Dr. Bob Holsworth, Managing Principal of DecideSmart, during his Chamber Leadership Series address. Mr. Steve Kocen, Senior Vice President of Business Development of presenting sponsor Southern Bank introduced Dr. Holsworth during the December 14 event. Dr. Holsworth’s remarks focused on the recent presidential election results and how the polling did not accurately reflect the results. Dr. Holsworth stated that there is a three-point explanation for the election: 1) Donald Trump won by a huge margin of the rural vote and the voter turnout in rural areas was greater than expected. 2) There was some cross-over in voters who supported President Obama in the last election supporting Trump in the white working class vote. 3) Hilary Clinton didn’t turn out her base votes, including young voters and minority voters.
Dr. Holsworth further remarked on the upcoming Virginia state gubernatorial election, which will join the state of New Jersey as be one of only two states holding races in 2017. This election is “so important,” said Holsworth, “because the governor presides over redistricting in Virginia.” Dr. Holsworth concluded his remarks to the audience of business leaders with a question and answer period where he addressed topics from the role and impact of the media, to Donald Trump’s cabinet choices, and Tim Kaine’s role during the campaign.
