Hampton Roads Chamber Hosts "Hampton Roads Business Brief: Climbing Down From The Fiscal Cliff" on January 9

WHAT: National speaker, Dr. Andrew Biggs, will explore the challenges and opportunities presented by the looming “fiscal cliff.”  The term “fiscal cliff,” was first used by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke when he warned of the harm that the American economic recovery would face if Congress does not act.  Bernanke argued November 20, 2012, that fears about the cliff are already causing uncertainty in financial markets and possibly damaging growth. Particularly hard hit would be the Department of Defense, from which 45% of Hampton Roads’ economy is derived.

The Chamber’s Hampton Roads Business Brief has gained status as one of the leading local programs on economic issues and is a key forum for elected officials, municipal, community and business leaders to discuss economic drivers in Hampton Roads.  In its fifth year, this annual event focuses on a different key element in our economy each year. From the impact of the port, our military and our nation’s economic health, the annual Business Brief has provided the business community with insight on the status and future of our economic assets in Hampton Roads.

WHO: Keynote speaker is Dr. Andrew G. Biggs, resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington. Prior to joining AEI he was the principal deputy commissioner of the Social Security Administration (SSA), where he oversaw SSA's policy research efforts and led the agency's participation in the Social Security Trustees working group. In 2005, he worked on Social Security reform at the National Economic Council and in 2001 was on the staff of the President's Commission to Strengthen Social Security. He holds a Bachelors degree from the Queen's University of Belfast, Masters degrees from Cambridge University and the University of London and a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics.
